Over the last two nights nearly 34 million people tuned in to watch the season 12 premier of American Idol. Although this premier wasn’t the highest in the history of the television show, the programming still stirred a bit of controversy. In the months leading up to this week, there was speculation on how two powerhouse women would handle one another in sharing their duties.
In one corner we have Mariah Carey, a singer and songwriter that has sold over 200 million records worldwide making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Her stellar voice has a seven octave range that has secured her place as one of the best female vocalists of our time. In the other corner there is Nicki Minaj, a fairly new pop star with one of the best-selling albums of 2012. Minaj’s savvy business mind has brought her a fragrance line, a custom made Barbie doll in her image, an Adiddas endorsement and another with Viva Glam M.A.C cosmetics. Both of these talented women were placed on the judge’s panel to provide these aspiring artists with not only advice, but also inspiration. Unfortunately, the spotlight usually reserved for standout contestants has been overshadowed by bickering and obvious dissension between judges.
