ABC’s Scandal returns on Thursday, Feb. 27; and the sneak peeks indicates that the show will deliver yet another exciting episode that will not fall short on drama.
According to ABC’s synopsis for episode 11, titled, “Ride, Sally, Ride” Kerry Washington’s character Olivia Pope will find herself in a “challenging new role.”
While the show has always offered a bang with plenty of plot twists and surprises, the real focus of the show is Ms. Pope’s stylish wardrobe!
Ms. Pope, a crisis manager who has an adulterous affair with the president of the United States, ends up in some pretty compromising situations. However, some “Gladiators” (dedicated Scandal fans) are more concerned with what Olivia will be wearing as the fixer.
Olivia’s style choices has a fan following of its own. Shortly after each episode airs, millions of tweets praising her looks have gone viral with the hashtag #ScandalFashion. There are many Tumblr blogs featuring snapshots of her outfits in the form of pictures, videos and GIFS.
Luckily for Gladiators, the show’s costume designer, Lyn Paolo shared details about Olivia’s style ahead of the mid-season premiere. She revealed the fashion labels she favors for the well-heeled entrepreneur. Armani, Max Mara, and Christian Dior, are just some of the luxury brands Olivia has wowed us in.
“In her own way, she has this Sheryl Sandberg-Lean In element, so the lighter tones she wears are supposed to be symbolic of being amazingly powerful, but also exude femininity,” Lyn told Vanity Fair. “She is going to stand out in this world.”
“We’ve amped up the fashion, too, because we needed it for the story,” Lyn told Atlanta Journal-Constitution about the wardrobe direction for season 3. Suits are Olivia’s main staples and when it comes to choosing coats she thinks about shapes. Outerwear with an edge that is still professional. She also confessed that in any given episode she could be dressing up to 80 people.
“We should call it Scramble not Scandal,” the designer who in the past has worked on West Wing and ER joked.
The lawyer/PR guru/superwoman known as Olivia Pope has become TV’s newest Carrie Bradshaw, with a corporate twist. Mixing soft colors and fierce suit separates, chic overcoats, and signature long necklaces, Olivia Pope is the newest fashion idol for every professional woman out there. The show tries to choose fashion for Olivia that reflect “a balance of strength and femininity,” says actress Kerry Washington who portrays the infamous character of Ms. Pope on the series. Styled by talented wardrobe stylist Lyn Paolo, the character of Olivia Pope operates her own law firm in Washington D.C., and because she works on her own terms, she can often play with colors and is not beholden to the black and navy suits of many of Washington’s political insiders. Paolo is very much in the know of what’s hot in the modeling and fashion industries, and incorporates several top designers in Olivia’s wardrobe; including Escada, Christian Dior, Valentino, and her famed grey Armani jacket from the pilot episode. This nod to high fashion displays the character’s personality and worldly experience.
One of the great things Scandal is bringing to the show this season is that they are returning select pieces of Olivia’s wardrobe from season one, to create the idea that Olivia is a dynamic, real working woman with an authentic closet. The show also fits the color of Olivia’s fashion choices with the mood of the scene, leaning toward whites during lighter scenes, and darker colors during more intense moments.
